“I got the job! Now what?”

Getting hired is one of the best feelings in the world, but uncertainty will creep back into the picture if you lack a plan to prepare for the new role. Here are a few tips to get you ready.

I often field questions from designers who are working through professional dilemma’s that don’t fit nicely into a textbook. Many have volunteered to open our conversations up to the public. Identifying information was removed for specific individuals or companies.

Designer I signed the offer last week, and I am super excited about joining the team. The company is with a late-stage startup. I received a great deal with pay, benefits, and perks from the help from your previous tips. Do you have any advice on preparing for the new role and staying on top at a startup?

So you landed the gig, and you’ve already asked the right question… now what?

My advice to you is to align yourself for the climb ahead by doing a few things.

1) Accept that you are good enough for this gig.

Sometimes we beat ourselves up and psyche ourselves out because we think we somehow got lucky or fooled someone. This feeling is imposter syndrome, and we need to recognize that everyone will have a touch or it or a ton of it at some point. You should be very confident that someone picked you and they did so for a reason.

2) Be ready to have a lot thrown at you all at once.

Joining a new company is the deep end of the pool. It doesn’t matter who you are. And the best way to survive this period is to focus on listening. Become an expert listener and when you do speak, always be seeking more information. Your job is to absorb everything you can, as fast as you can and that’s extremely hard to do when you are talking more than you are listening.

3) Carve out time to continue growing.

When you get the new gig, you’re going to need to level up to their process and tools. I would give yourself a minimum of an hour a day for the first 90 days dedicated to studying something related to work in your downtime. Bonus, by adopting this continued growth mindset now will make growth easier to attain and maintain later.
